Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry His Cross
THE FIFTH STATION
Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry his cross.
We adore thee, O Christ, and we praise thee:
Because by thine holy cross, thou hast redeemed the world.
And when the soldiers had mocked Jesus, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. (St. Mark 15: 20 – 22)
Kneel and Pause
I cry unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord do I make my supplication. I poured out my complaint before him; I showed before him my trouble. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me. I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. (Psalm 141: 1-4)
Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, help us to see in the sufferings and shortcomings of our lives a share in thy cross; strengthen and console us in the belief that we bear all things in union with thee, who have taken upon thyself even our guilt. Amen.
