Jesus Meets His Afflicted Mother
THE FOURTH STATION
Jesus meets his afflicted mother.
We adore thee, O Christ, and we praise thee:
Because by thine holy cross, thou hast redeemed the world.
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. (St. John 19: 25-27)
Kneel and Pause
What thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter Jerusalem? What shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin Zion? For thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee? (Lamentations 2: 13)
Let us pray. O blessed Lord, at thy passion a sword of sorrow pierced the loving heart of thy mother as Simeon had foretold. Grant that we who look back on her sorrows with compassion might receive the healing fruits of thy sufferings. Amen.
