Jesus Carries His Cross
THE SECOND STATION
Jesus carries his cross.
We adore thee, O Christ, and we praise thee:
Because by thine holy cross, thou hast redeemed the world.
And Pilate saith unto the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priest answered, We have no king but Caesar. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. And he bearing his cross went forth. (St. John 19:4b-17a)
Kneel and Pause
Who hath believed our report? To whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? He grew up as a tender plant, as a root out of a dry ground; and when we saw him, there was no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Isaiah 53:1-3)
Let us pray. Father in heaven, thy Son, Jesus Christ, still carries his cross in his persecuted brethren throughout the world. Make us feel the needs of all men so that we might as readily help them as we would help Jesus himself. Amen.
