Jesus is Stripped of His Clothes

Jesus is stripped of his clothes.

We adore thee, O Christ, and we praise thee:

Because by thine holy cross, thou hast redeemed the world.

They gave Jesus vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. (St. Matthew 27: 34-35)

Kneel and Pause

Happy is the man whom God correcteth; therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there were none; and for comforters, but I found none. Rather, they gave me gall for my meat, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.(Job 5:17-18, Psalm 68: 21-22)

Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, stripped of everything, thou didst stand exposed to the jeers and contempt of the people whom thou didst love. Clothe us with genuine love of others, so that nothing we suffer may ever fill our hearts with hatred or bitterness.  Amen.
