Jesus Is Condemned To Death
Then cometh Jesus with his disciples unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto them, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. (St. Matthew 26: 36 – 39)
Almighty and eternal Father, accept our prayer of thanksgiving for thy Beloved Son, our Saviour and Lord. As we recall his Sacred Passion, send the Spirit of Christ into our hearts, we beseech thee, so that whether we pray or work, we might do all in union with Christ our Redeemer. Amen.
THE FIRST STATION
Jesus is condemned to death.
We adore thee, O Christ, and we praise thee:
Because by thine holy cross, thou hast redeemed the world.
Again the high priest asked Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death. (St. Mark 14: 61b – 64)
Kneel and Pause
The kings of the earth set themselves against the Lord, and against his Anointed. I will declare the decree of the Lord; the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. (Psalm 2:2, 7-8)
Let us pray. All-powerful and eternal God, for proclaiming the truth, thy Son, Jesus Christ, is condemned to death by crucifixion. Stir up thy love in our hearts so that we might be ever faithful to all that thou hast told us and fear nothing more than the loss of thy friendship through sin. Amen.
