The Book of Common Prayer reminds each of us that “at all celebrations of the Liturgy, it is fitting that the principal celebrant, whether bishop or priest, be assisted by other priests, and by deacons and lay persons”. (BCP 322 and 354). For our acolytes this includes the said and sung Masses of Sunday worship, the daily morning Masses, and Masses held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. In addition, many are called to serve for requiems and other special liturgies.
The following thought from the February-April 1994 Forward Day by Day booklet depicts Acolyte Master Reece Thomson’s feelings about service as a layman:
“The beauty we create in our churches lifts us to God; the music which fills us with exultation opens our hearts to experience God’s presence. In making worship beautiful, we are offering God our very best, standing on tiptoe and stretching as high as we possibly can to reach for God.”
The Acolyte ministry at St. Thomas the Apostle Hollywood is open to all baptized Christians, regular in attendance, who are deemed to serve at the Altar of God.
